As the Deputy Chief of Staff, Josh Lyman is portrayed as having one of the wittiest minds on staff, along with a cocky sense of humor mixed with some boyish charm. He eventually falls for his assistant, Donna Moss, and becomes Chief of Staff at the end of the series.
Before the show premiered, Whitford had starred in a number of award-winning movies, such as A Few Good Men, Philadelphia, Bicentennial Man and Billy Madison.
