The Hindu god Dattatreya (also known as Datta), who is a combined form of the holy trinity, Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, is celebrated on this day, which is also known as Dattatreya Jayanti or Datta Jayanti. Maharashtra is where Dattatreya Jayanti is primarily observed. God Dattatreya is renowned for assisting people in leading moral lives in the proper manner.

A seven-day festival honouring God Datta is held at shrines like Manik Prabhu. Beginning on Ekadashi and lasting till Purnima, it is a huge celebration. Additionally, reciting the Shri Gurucharitra is a significant tradition that officially kicks off the celebrations seven days before the Jayanti. The eve of Datta Jayanti occurs on a Full Moon day (Purnima) in the month of Margashirsha, according to the Hindu calendar.
