After seven films and a TV show, Chucky has died multiple times. Here is a breakdown of every way Chucky has died, and which is the most gruesome.
The Child’s Play franchise consists of seven films and a tv show, so Chucky has died many gruesome deaths. He’s been shot, decapitated, and exploded; the kills range from horrifying to rather hilarious. The serial killer-possessed Good Guy doll has been through the wringer, yet he always finds a way to resurrect for the next movie.
The first film in the franchise, Child’s Play, was released in 1988 and has been scaring audiences ever since with its tiny, but vicious killer. At the end of each film, Chucky dies, and it seems that there is no way he could have possibly survived. He is rebuilt time and time again though because somehow, the Good Guy Doll company “Play Pals” thinks a bloody, cut-up doll needs to be put back together again. As he said in Bride of Chucky, though, “I’ll be back; I always come back.”
After a 30-plus year franchise, Chucky the pint-sized killer doll made his return, this time to the small screen in the SYFY series Chucky. He died yet again at the end of the season finale, but with Chucky season 2 in the works, it's guaranteed he won't stay dead for long. Chucky’s died many deaths; before Chucky season 2 is released, why not catch up on every way he's died (& which is the most gruesome).
Child's Play
The first Child’s Play (1988) kept harping on the fact that the only way Chucky can be killed is if he’s shot in the heart. Obviously, this isn’t exactly the case as he keeps coming back to life, but it did kill him for two years until the sequel. After using voodoo to put his soul into the doll, serial killer Charles Lee Ray is told he needs to transfer his soul into the first person he revealed his secret to, 6-year-old Andy Barclay. Unfortunately for Chucky, he slowly turns human from being in the doll body for too long. Not only is his body becoming human, but so are his internal organs, thus meaning if shot in the heart, he’ll die.
At the end of the film, Andy, his mother Karen, and two police detectives, Mike Norris and Jackie Santos, try to fight off Chucky. After he's lit on fire and loses both an arm and a leg, Karen shoots him repeatedly, and he is even beheaded. It isn’t until Norris shoots Chucky in the heart that he finally dies. The first death of the franchise is pretty impressive, with his last line in Chucky’s Good Guys Doll voice saying, “Hi, I’m Chucky! Wanna plaaaay?” until finally giving up the ghost. Nonetheless, it isn’t the most gruesome of the franchise, as the kills get more and more bloody throughout.
Child's Play 2
Child’s Play 2 (1990) takes place two years after the first film’s events. Andy is now in a foster home, as his mother has been sent away to a mental institution. The Good Guys Doll company rebuilds the doll because they don’t want the “killer doll” bad rep and want to prove their dolls are harmless. This doesn’t last long, as Chucky makes sure he finds his way back to Andy, killing anyone who gets in his way.
After Chucky kills both of Andy’s foster parents, Andy is sent back to the group home, yet Chucky finds his way to Andy’s foster sister Kyle and forces her to drive to Andy. Eventually, Chucky leads them to the Play Pals factory where Andy and Kyle try to kill him. After a series of losing his arms and legs, Kyle finally puts an air tube in Chucky’s mouth, making his head explode. This kill is pretty high on the gruesome scale, as Chucky’s head slowly grows until it explodes everywhere; remnants of plastic, blood, and guts are all over the place, leaving for a death that seems to be the end of Chucky–for another few years that is.
Child's Play 3
Although only released a year after the previous movie, Child’s Play 3 (1991) takes place many years later. Andy is now a 16-year-old who attends military school. Although Child’s Play 3 is the worst in the franchise, the way Chucky dies is one of the best and most gruesome. Chucky finds his way to Andy but on his quest befriends Tyler, a younger, more impressionable cadet at Andy's school. After Chucky tries to transfer his soul into Tyler's body, Andy shoots Chucky in the face. Chucky then tries to kill Andy, but Tyler gives Andy his knife. Andy then cuts Chucky's arm off and throws him into a huge fan, which slices and shreds Chucky to pieces. Seeing bits and pieces of the killer doll’s body thrown into the air is a fun time and a very bloody one for high-gore fans.
Bride of Chucky
Bride of Chucky (1998) is when the franchise changes from horror to taking on more of a dark comedy tone. Andy and that whole part of Chucky’s life are over (for a few movies). This time, it is Chucky’s old bride, Tiffany, who finds the doll. She puts him back together and conducts voodoo on him, bringing him to life. Chucky then kills Tiffany, in a truly gruesome scene of electrocuting her in a bathtub, thus making her a doll for life. The two become a Bonnie and Clyde-type couple, murdering anyone who gets in their tracks.
The duo then takes a young couple, Jesse and Jade, hostage. Their goal is a road trip to track down Chucky’s buried human body as a magic amulet that will transfer their souls into the couple is with the body. Taking pity on the young lovers and moved by their love in the face of how cruel Chucky can be, Tiffany turns on Chucky at the last minute and throws him into his own grave. He is then shot multiple times in the chest by Jade. Chucky dies by gun a few times, and these aren’t nearly as gruesome as the kills in Child’s Play 2 & 3, but him being killed in his own human grave is one to remember.
Seed of Chucky
In Seed of Chucky (2004), Chucky and Tiffany have a child, Glen/Glenda, a traumatized doll who is used as a dummy for an abusive ventriloquist. When Glen/Glenda sees a show called Chucky Goes Psycho, he believes Chucky and Tiffany (who are rebuilt as props), are his parents due to having “Made in Japan” engraved on their arms. Glen/Glenda find their way to Chucky and Tiffany, and they revive them with the magic amulet from Bride of Chucky.
After Chucky tries to force his murderous lifestyle on Glen/Glenda, although they all agreed to stop, Glen/Glenda starts to question their father. After Chucky kills Tiffany in a moment of rage, Glen/Glenda turns on Chucky and attacks him with an ax, dismembering and beheading him. This kill is number one on the gruesome scale and a pretty shocking one at that, as no one was expecting innocent Glen/Glenda to be the one to murder their father.
Curse of Chucky
After a nine-year hiatus, Chucky comes back to a brand-new cast of victims in Curse of Chucky (2013). The film goes back to the franchise’s horror roots, with the doll entering a new innocent family’s home consisting of paraplegic Nica Pierce and her mother, Sarah. After Chucky kills her entire family, Nica tries to tell everyone Chucky did it, but of course, no one believes her. Nica is framed for the murders and sent to a mental asylum. The film ends with Tiffany finding Chucky and mailing him to his next victim.
In the post-credits scene, it is revealed that six months have passed, and Chucky is delivered to Andy Barclay, who hasn’t been in the franchise for years. As he is on the phone with his mother, Chucky tries to escape the box to finally kill Andy finally, but Andy shoots Chucky in the heart. This seems to be a definitive death, as Andy finally gets his revenge years later, but this is not the case for long.
Cult of Chucky
Cult of Chucky (2017) is a continuation of Nica’s story in a mental institution. This film uses voodoo to its best ability, where now there are multiple Chuckys, which each contain a portion of Charles Lee Ray’s soul – basically Child's Play's version of Harry Potter's horcruxes. Tiffany mails multiple dolls to different victims, and one of the many Chuckys ends up at Andy Barclay’s house, but Andy has already gone to the institution to help Nica get out. Andy outsmarts Chucky, finding a gun in the doll’s stomach, and shoots him in the head. He then puts steps on Chucky's head, crushing it. Chucky being shot to death is a little repetitive, so this is pretty low on the gruesome scale.
Chucky
Chucky comes back again in Syfy’s TV show Chucky (2021), where Chucky wreaks havoc on a new generation of victims. His primary victim is a 14-year-old boy named Jake who finds the doll at an estate sale. Chucky tries to turn Jake into a killer, yet fails. After almost everyone Jake loves is killed by Chucky, in the Chucky season 1 finale, Jake squeezes Chucky's head until his eyes pop out and his head explodes. There are multiple dolls, though, so this is just one of many. The kill is a nice change from Chucky being shot, and the doll having his eyes being blown out of his head is a nice touch. Child's Play fans will just have to wait and see how many more dolls there are in Chucky season 2 and how gruesome their deaths will be.
