The Elder Scrolls Online does not offer an offline mode, meaning any updates or maintenance require the game to be taken offline. 1st December 2023 Update: NA & EU Megaservers Period Announcement
Developer ZeniMax Online Studios announced that maintenance was scheduled for 6th December 2023 to apply an incremental patch update, forgoing two maintenance periods for console and PC, respectively. This will occur between 12 am PT / 3 am ET / 8 am UTC and 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 6 pm UTC on 6th December 2023.
How Long Will ESO Megaservers Be Down?
Bethesda strives to keep its game servers running without interruptions to ensure fans can play uninterrupted. However, it can take several hours to complete updates when necessary maintenance is required.
Although the team works diligently to get the game up and running as soon as possible, it's not uncommon for Elder Scrolls Online to be offline for four to five hours, or sometimes even longer on rare occasions. Rest assured that Bethesda aims to provide a seamless gaming experience for all players.
For Update 40 specifically, maintenance begins on 30th October 2023 at 1 am PDT / 4 am EDT / 8 am UTC on NA and EU megaservers for PC and Mac, which will remain down for four hours. However, according to the official Bethesda Support Twitter account, the downtime is extended by two more hours, with servers returning online at 9 am PDT / 12 pm EDT / 4 pm UTC.

Determining the exact duration of ESO server maintenance is usually provided hours before maintenance begins on the NA and EU megaservers. Generally, the megaservers are taken down before being brought back online after four to five hours unless specified otherwise.
As mentioned above, the NA and EU megaservers for PC and Mac will be back online at their new time of 9 am PDT / 12 pm EDT / 4 pm UTC. This was because the maintenance period was extended by two hours, according to a tweet from the Bethesda Support account, while servers were offline.
