Krein has some serious academic prowess. After graduating from Rutgers University, he got a medical degree at Thomas Jefferson Medical College before getting a PhD in cell and developmental biology (via The New York Times). Medicine runs in the family for the Kreins; Howard's mother was a physician assistant in cardiology at Cooper University Hospital, while his father retired as a director of marketing for Aetna U.S. Healthcare.
Krein and his social worker wife share a passion for philanthropy. He is certified in otolaryngology and plastic surgery, which comes in handy for his volunteer work with the International Hospital for Children, operating on children with facial deformities in Belize (via Daily Mail).
